In fact, Barrack Obama’s new chief of staff mentioned the car industry specifically in an interview on the television program “Face the Nation,” calling it “an essential part of the economy.” Rahm Emanuel said the federal government should provide aid to the automobile industry to help the major automakers and their supplies survive the financial crisis, the New York Times reported.

The comments came after America’s largest automaker, General Motors, the week of the election stated it has been losing more than $2 billion a month and faces bankruptcy. The new President’s staff members are calling on the Bush administration to accelerate $25 billion in federal loans provided by a recent law to help automakers and suppliers retool to build more energy-efficient vehicles.

Obama’s team hopes to come up with ideas to help the industry while at the same time developing a new energy policy that will let America become less dependent on foreign oil.

Of course, gas prices are pretty much doing that anyway, as buyers are more inclined to purchase gas sippers. It remains to be seen how the federal government could boost sales of fuel-efficient cars.

Uncertainty Reduced, Helps to Sell a Used Car or Buy a New Car

All of this should be good news to those selling a used car or in the market to buy a new car or buy a used car. The end of the election has reduced “uncertainty” and should embolden consumers to open their wallets and increase spending overall, according to the Portland Oregonian.

“The uncertainty is gone,” said the chairman and chief executive for Lithia Motors in Oregon. “Especially as the fear of the economy collapsing and the inability of banks to lend goes out of people’s minds.”

It couldn’t have come soon enough for the embattled automotive industry. Cars.com already is looking ahead, planning to kick off its 2009 marketing campaign with a 60-second commercial to air during the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. Many automakers each November or December launch a “red tag” sale, or other incentives to boost sales as the new model year begins and before the holiday season when most families are focused on smaller purchases.

If you were thinking about getting some cash for used cars, or just selling your one used vehicle to position yourself to purchase a different car, the timing couldn’t be better.

Couple the cash gain from selling a used car with an incentive or special program offered by automakers, and you could be surprised at what kind of deal you can get buying a used car or even a new model.

While automakers arrange red-tag sales and other incentives at the end of each year, this season they seem to be competing even harder due to terrible new-car sales figures in October.

Sell a Used Car and Parlay the Earnings into a New Vehicle

So where are these deals? To start, think of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, as the Big Three American automakers have suffered most in the economic downturn and have struggled to compete with Asian and European small- and mid-size car manufacturers.

General Motors was primed to begin its annual “Red Tag” sale at the start of November, with lower pricing and cash back for most of its new models. Usually the sale starts later in the year but General Motors moved it up to boost sales.

Chrysler will push incentive programs that mean cash rebates up to $6,000, and discounted financing on remaining 2008 model year vehicles.

Ford is even offering special programs for its smaller cars, even though they are selling better than most of the rest of its fleet. The Ford Focus currently carries manufacturer discounts through early November.

In many areas, you can get a 2009 Focus sedan with a manual transmission for less than $14,000 after cash back of more than $2,000. Ford also offers zero-percent financing for 36 months in many instances.

These are but a few examples of what’s out there if you were contemplating selling a used car or seeking cash for used cars to help exchange what you have for what you might want more.

Couple Incentives with Cash from Selling a Used Car

Some of the current special deals are regional. In Arizona, for example, auto dealers are offering deals that include up to $10,000 back on some vehicles, and zero-percent financing.

Even Toyota has tinkered with zero-percent financing, and some luxury brands are lowering prices. Nissan’s Sentra and Versa have $750 and $500 cash-back deals or financing rates below 5 percent.

AutoWeek on Oct. 20, 2008, listed some of the best deals. Among them:

• On a 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2, get a $6,000 to $8,000 factory-to-dealer incentive on a new vehicle incentive on a vehicle with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $40,000.
• For a 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty, with an MSRP of $40,660, you can get $7,000, cash back or 0 to 3.9 percent financing.
• Get $8,500 to $9,500 cash back, or 0 to 1.9 percent financing, on a 2008 Lincoln Mark LT suggested to retail at $39,565.
• A 2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class with MSRP at $45,475 can come with $7,000 to $9,000 factory-to-dealer incentive.
• You can get $7,000 to $8,000 cash back or 0 to 1.9 percent financing on a 2008 Lincoln Navigator priced at almost $50,000.

Think about cash for used cars that you could generate, or the payment for selling a used car, and how you might be able to tag that onto one of the incentives mentioned above to get yourself into a fine new, or almost new, car.

How Cool Can You Afford?

Type “cool new cars” into an Internet search engine and you might be surprised by what you find.

For example, there’s actually a site called New Cool Cars where you can click “Top 10 Coolest Cars” and wonder if you’ll ever be able to afford No. 1, the Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster.

With its $336,000 to $378,000 price tag, perhaps the name should be Mercy-elago.

It’s fascinating to view the photos on the website. Interesting to note that all four of the top-listed vehicles have doors that open upward, instead of swinging out.

Heck, even No. 10 is out of reach for most of us. A new Bentley Continental GT – called Hollywood’s Coolest Car – lists for $175,000.

Imagine a loan on that sucker, it’s more like a mortgage…

Not everyone searches around for “cool new cars” just to dream. Some search the Internet trying to find a car that will trigger comments from friends, family and passersby.

Kelley Blue Book lists a top 10 cool new cars under $18,000 for 2008

Buyingadvice.com lists a series of “cool new cars” that “combine roadster glamour and performance without the price tag,” including the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, and Mazda MX5.

Car Tuning Central asks, What makes cool cars cool?  Among the reasons: style, engine power, safety and uniqueness. “Style is one of the most important aspects of cool cars, considering if it doesn’t look nice it probably won’t sell.”

Don’t know about that. There are some pretty dorky-looking box cars out there that many people think are cool.

Defining Cool

In this age where blogs are dime-a-dozen, hundreds of them list their own “cool new cars”. They can differ greatly because, well, everyone has their own definition of coolness.

Wikipedia defines cool as “an aesthetic of attitude, behavior, comportment, appearance, style and Zeitgeist. Because of the varied and changing connotations of cool, as well its subjective nature, the word has no single meaning.”

And, “It has associations of composure and self-control and often is used as an expression of admiration or approval.”

Theories abound about what is cool. “Cool is a knowledge, a way of life,” Lewis Macadams said.

“Coolness is the proper way you represent yourself to a human being,” said Robert Farris Thompson.

Some say cool can mean a sense of exclusivity. That makes sense considering the first list of cars above.

Others might say cool means an attitude of self-assurance. That seems appropriate for car owners. Someone might feel self-assured in that Scion, and if so, they must be cool. Right?

Recent news reports that major automakers and banks alike are steering business practices away from leasing vehicles.

The blame rests mostly in the fact that people aren’t interested in luxury vehicles, trucks or sport-utility vehicles much anymore.

Loosing the Lease

These segments dominated the leased-car boom of the 1990’s into this century.

No longer, gas prices and the economy changed that, and fast.

The Washington Post reported in August 2008 that General Motors and Chrysler were scaling back or re-directing their leasing operations.

For GM, its lending arm, GMAC Financial Services, will reduce the number of new lease originations in America. This is in response to losing $717 million in the second quarter of 2008 in its auto finance business.

Chrysler will re-tool its auto incentives to make it more attractive (read: affordable) to buy rather than lease. This includes new 72-month finance deals on a great range of vehicles including compacts, midsizes and full-sized cars.

The concept is to offer the same monthly payments compared with leasing for 36 months. Additionally, Chrysler will offer up to $750 to returning lease customers to purchase a new car.

Impacts of the Car Leasing Decline

Large banks are airing on the side of caution too, Chase and Wells Fargo have announced their exit from the car-leasing business.

The result will be fewer financers offering programs, reducing choices and hindering your ability to strike a good lease deal.

Recently Edmunds.com reported an analysis of the impact to the motoring public. 

Among the results:

• Only consumers with the best credit may qualify for manufacturers’ leases
• Higher finance incentives will match low monthly lease payments, making buying a better option
• Banks, third-party leasing companies and credit unions may continue to offer attractive leases to consumers
• Consumers ending leases may be able to buy their vehicle at a bargain price*

*Note that many currently leased vehicles, such as luxury cars, are no longer in demand and as such prices for used versions have lowered dramatically. 

For example, the Automotive Lease Guide notes at the end of a typical 36-month lease in 2007, a Ford Expedition was valued at 44.6% of the manufacturers suggested retail price. In 2008 its residual value declined to 32.4% of retail price.

The Good, Bad and Future of Auto Leasing

What this means for lovers of new cars is not good. 

Almost a fifth of new cars that rolled out of showrooms last year were from lease contracts. Take that away, and new-car sellers have to make up for it somewhere.

And, expect monthly payments to go up, unless you agree to a very long-term deal.

Leases have always been attractive for keeping monthly payments down, and avoiding long-term finance agreements. But there are hitches, including one experienced by too many lease holders: don’t drive too much.

Lease contracts usually include additional charges for excess wear and tear, plus a cap on mileage. Typically you will have to pay 15 to 25 cents per mile over a set allotment, such as 12,000 miles per year.

Driving just a little too much can be costly. For example, at 15 cents per extra mile, going just 1,000 miles over your allotment would cost $150 at the end of the lease.

Multiply that times, say, a three-year lease, and you’re looking at $450. And 12,000 miles per year is not a lot of driving.

Will car leasing go away entirely? Most likely not, as consumers prefer more financing options to expand competition and keep prices down, and automakers will respond to such demand.

Just don’t expect to be familiar with your next lease contract, as financers are changing the rules to react to the changing economy and marketplace.

It’s no secret that the financing of large purchases has become a booming business for those who front the cash to consumers. If you can avoid financing, the savings can be enormous.

Paying cash for used cars is one of the secrets of the Economides’ success. But, of course, not everyone has the ability or resources to do so.

And paying cash for used cars is just one of the large purchases Americans face in life. Of course there is the home mortgage, and other finance-able transactions such as student loans or home improvement projects.

But for any such transaction, the Economides say, it pays to shop around.

The World of Financing – When Paying Cash for Used Cars is Not Possible

Shopping around is crucial if you cannot apply cash for used cars, or for that matter cash for any large purchase. If you do finance, do so patiently.

For example, before purchasing their first house, the Economides looked at 40 homes and called 10 banks to find the best deal. Then, prior to refinancing three years later, they again called 10 lenders.

It’s almost like the KISS theory, albeit without the K for “keep.” It’s simple. The more time you dedicate to searching and learning, the more money saved.

Home financing is much more challenging than automobile purchases, hardly anyone can pay cash for a used house like they pay cash for used cars.

So the time needed to research multiplies by several factors. But enough about financing and home purchases…back to cash for used cars.

Purchasing cars is one thing. But what if it’s the other way around: you need cash fast?

Maybe it’s for a family financial emergency, or to buy a different car, or perhaps you just have an extra car that’s expendable (more commonplace now that gas prices have hit the roof).

You can receive cash for used cars, too.

On the Flip Side: Receiving Cash for Used Cars

The Economides list “5 Steps to Money Saving Purchases” includes “Consider buying Used or borrowing an item instead of purchasing it.”

That means there are people out there thinking the same thing. So if its cash for used cars you seek, understand that there is a market out there.

There are two avenues to explore. First there is the tried-and-true method of selling to a private party.

Advertise your car for sale somehow, whether in a classified advertisement, signage, a word-of-mouth campaign, or all of the above. Buyers will surface.

From there you have to deal with inquiries, questions, meetings, test drives, etc. Few people appreciate such processes. Are there options?

Another route is to seek new services out there that offer cash for used cars. The number seems to be increasing in recent years, and they understand the power of the Internet and many have robust websites to help.

Usually these services use paying cash for used cars – as opposed to trade-ins or other lures – as a major marketing message. That can be attractive if it’s fast cash you need.

If you can pull it off, consider another of the Economides’ axioms: Pay with cash, not credit.

J.D. Power and Associates recently released its newest ranking of luxury vehicles based on dependability. Lexus took the title, with Buick dropping from the top spot it held last year.

This marks 14 years in a row that Lexus – Toyota’s high-end brand – held top rankings in the study.

The study measures problems experienced by original owners of vehicles after three years.

Lexus had 120 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 145 the previous year.

You May be Surprised at The Results

Some rankings, such as that of Buick, are rather surprising.

Not because Buick makes bad cars, but because dependability seems to be an asset that the company markets to sell its models.

Another interesting high-ranked luxury car was Ford’s Mercury, which placed second in the J.D. Power list.

It was followed Cadillac for General Motors, Toyota, and Honda’s Acura luxury brand.

Land Rover was the worst, with 344 problems per 100 vehicles.

Overall, the average improved to 206 problems per 100 vehicles, down by 10 from the previous year.

Most improved was GM’s Saab brand, to 254 problems, down from 319.

That was in the luxury class alone. In the compact car segment, the Toyota Prius hybrid was top-ranked. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was the top among the midsize sporty cars.

Ford models topped three categories: the Crown Victoria as the best large car, the Ford Ranger as a midsize pickup, and the Mercury Monterey as the most dependable minivan.

Chrysler was the only Detroit automaker with no brands besting the industry average.

So, What Are the Biggest Problems?

The biggest problem cited in the study was wind noise – peculiar considering the study was about dependability.

If a car’s ability to run smoothly is the most important aspect for an auto owner, who cares about wind noise?

That was followed by noisy brakes, pulling left or right, dashboard problems, and window fogging.

It’s Not All About J.D. Powers

There are, of course, other ratings for car dependability. MSN Autos offers its own Car Reliability Ratings, where you can simply type in the year, make and model of an auto to learn more.

On the site, of interest is a note that a major reason people resist buying used cars, according to J.D. Power research among focus groups, is buyers don’t want to inherit “someone else’s problems.”

The search mechanism is fun to play with. For example, typing in a 2000 Toyota Tacoma reveals that users give the vehicle an 8.7 rating, while MSN Autos gives it a 7.5.

Users and MSN Autos also post their own reviews.

“Best vehicle I ever owned,” reported one owner in an Overall assessment. “I do wish the new Tacoma’s were smaller, but if gas hits $5, maybe they’ll get small again.”

Of course some user reviews should be viewed with a grain of salt, because a writer may have sour grapes over his or her purchase that influences a negative review – which then remains on the site for all to see.

On the other side, who knows if glowing reports are coming from a dealership, or the actual automaker. Some companies have been known to have professional bloggers infiltrate review sites with positive reports – and the automotive industry is not alone in this facet.

Being smart and doing research that utilizes several different sources of information should help reduce the influence of opinions and provide solid factual evidence.

In fact, it seems to be moving in the other direction: minivans are just as popular today as ever.

People Love Their Minivans

Why? Well, families are still very much attracted to all the things a minivan can do. Carry multiple passengers, haul large loads, skip over to school or go shop, moms and dads alike have become attached to their minivans.

Some of the top minivans today come with attractive extras, or gizmos. It’s hard to imagine a four-wheel drive minivan, but Toyota offers one with its Sienna.

Satellite television and/or radio service, Bluetooth capabilities, rearview video and more are offered in many of today’s newer models.

Even fuel efficiency can be seen as a plus. They’re not going to outdo the smaller hybrids, but make no mistake, most of the top-selling minivans get decent gas mileage, at 18 or 19 miles per gallon.

Not shabby considering the weight they can carry.

Here is a look at some of the top minivans out there.

Town & Country

The Chrysler Town & Country has long been considered a luxury model in the minivan world. Its second- and third-row seats fold into the floor and are less cumbersome to deal with than seats that have to be removed completely from the vehicle.

Minivan owners used to have to figure out what to do with the removed seats, now they don’t have to worry about it with the Town & Country.

In recent years Chrysler chose to style the T&C more toward males, even bolstering its powertrain for more oomph.

Add class-exclusive options such as satellite television (complete with three family channels), and you have a pretty stylish minivan.

Sienna

Toyota has had a hit with its Sienna, delivering its reputation for reliability into the minivan realm.

Some call it “the Camry of minivans,” and for good reason. Its proven popularity has rivaled the Toyota sedan, as families grow and need a larger vehicle.

The Sienna comes in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive capabilities, getting a combined 18 or 19 miles per gallon.

Odyssey

Honda has been able to boost fuel efficiency in its Odyssey. The Japanese automaker tinkered with the exterior for the 2008 model year, and the result was a fresher, more hip appearance.

Added were new wheels, and interior alterations that expand the list of fabrics and colors.

Quest

Nissan is another Japanese manufacturer that has worked hard to improve its minivan offering. Its Quest does not look like your mother’s old van.

The exterior style can appear trendy, and what attracts many buyers is a package of neat interior features.

The SL trim has a power-sliding left-side door, automatic on/off headlights and the RearView monitor system; the SE adds standard Bluetooth and XM Satellite Radio.

The Quest also is among the most fuel-efficient of the minivans, at 19 mpg.

Sedona

Across the Sea of Japan, Kia presents its Sedona, known to be lower-priced but still delivering a vehicle that can meet any family’s needs.

The South Korean automaker offers the Sedona in America with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 195 horsepower, and a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Sedona was Kia’s top-selling vehicle in the United States when it was launched in 1999.  It comes in a short-wheel base model, a long-wheelbase mid-level LX model, and the long-wheelbase EX model.
